What Makes Ceylon Ayurveda Different?

ByDr. Hashani Perera, BAMS·May 12, 2026

Sri Lanka, known historically as Ceylon, sits as a jewel in the Indian Ocean — and its Ayurvedic tradition is equally precious. While Ayurveda is often discussed as a single discipline rooted in India, Sri Lanka developed its own distinct lineage: Deshiya Chikitsa, which translates literally to "country medicine."

This tradition blends the classical Sanskrit texts of the Charaka Samhita with indigenous island medicine passed down through generations of village physicians (Vedamahattayas) working with plants unique to the Sri Lankan ecosystem.

The Island Advantage

What makes our island herbs extraordinary is both geography and chemistry. Sri Lanka's tropical climate — 12 hours of equatorial sunlight year-round, combined with wet highlands and dry lowlands — creates plants with exceptionally high concentrations of active compounds.

Gotukola, for example, grows across the entire island and is consumed as a salad vegetable at most Sri Lankan meals. The concentration of asiaticoside and madecassoside in Ceylon Gotukola is measurably higher than in plants grown in more temperate climates.

The Living Lineage

At Chandayu, our formulations are designed with the guidance of third-generation Ayurvedic physicians based in Vavuniya — the cultural heart of Sri Lanka and home to the most prestigious Ayurvedic healing lineages. These are not textbook formulations; they are living, breathing protocols refined over a century of clinical practice.

This is what sets Ceylon Ayurveda apart: not just the ingredients, but the unbroken chain of human wisdom behind every bottle.
